| Food | I would eat at the Chicago Bandera all the time. When I re-located and found it off Wilshire, I was like YAY! Heavy, tasty, American food in a woody, boothy, dark, cozy vibe spot here in LA too. Somehow, this place does make more sense in a mid-west winter, but it gets chilly here sometimes. If not, pretend you are cold. I find a seat, and in one second I am asked if I'd like something to drink. I tell the cheery bartender I'd like to eat at the bar. Bang, she sets up my place. Bang, a menu. Bang, my drink. Bang, the specials are... Artic Char and Seabass. The man on my left is having a business dinner, he asks me what I am getting '... not sure yet' I am torn between the Char and my super-favorite the Barbecue Salmon (I crave this dish) He goes with the Char. I will decide after I have some starters, I am over-hungry, the red zone, I could order the whole menu. Three seconds later, the bread plate and 'nice little house salad' are in front of me (that is really what its called, adorable right?) This cornbread is better than cake, it is sweet/savory, very moist, maybe a few sticks of butter are in there. The bread plate has cornbread and focciaia, warmed and served with a generous scoop of guacamole. This is genius, I love avocado on bread. My salad is better than 'nice' ... it has avocado, fresh tomatoes, goat cheese, corn bread croutons, a perfect vinaigrette. Yum. My dinner was delish, the grilled salmon is med-rare, moist, tangy sweet, the brussel spouts are sauteed with dates, the cauliflower has raisins with it. Bandera does sweet/savory food combos really well, I love it. |
| Bartender/Staff | My drink and water glass never go below halfway. I am asked how dinner is, service does not skip a beat. |
| Attitude | Bandera is part of the Hillstone posse (Houstons) HILLSTONE.COM - they have their lighting, interior, and service situation locked up. Friendly, and corp - very consistent ( apparently they all get 'trained' which is why no beat gets skipped and they always are smiling about serving you) Only problem is: I pull out my camera to take yum dinner pictures to share with all of you, but I learn I'd need to call so n' so first ... this is a corporate restaurant ... its forbotten. Sorry about that. |
| Scene |
It is more crowded and loud - it feels like a Friday but its Tuesday. The scene is festive, noisy, people are pretty stylish. The after-work crowd packs the bar area families, couples, biz dinners fill the booths. A jazz trio play on in the corner, these musicians are good, they look like they are enjoying themselves, this makes me happy. A man to my left told me his 'team' won, they were the underdog and its a big deal. I am always happy to hear of the underdogs victory, like the movie 'Rudy' or something. |

Well, the man to my left did ask me how my dinner was. Since he was so generous and family about it,I ask him if he'd like to try my salmon...he did save me from having the bland Artic Char. He asks me if I'd like to get a drink together sometime, I agree, he asks for my number. We shoot the breeze a little more, his business comrade looks annoyed. |
| General Thoughts |
Oh gosh, it was crowded and I was feeling very vulnerable, but I was hungry. It was my first time EVER eating at the bar solo, let alone, solo at Bandera. But...I did it! I had an awesome time. At 8pm, I finished up, tipped well and took a few legal pictures. First time solo at the bar, I did it! |
